The Touring station wagon was added to the E34 range in September 1992, the first wagon in 5 Series history, though in Germany the Touring appeared earlier. The 535i in the United States still used the large six cylinder engine, and the 5 Series now had the saloon and estate bodies it would carry through its later life, with M5 versions of both. It was the first time that the 5 Series could be had as an estate, a body that became a mainstay of the range.
