The production version of the E36 was launched in October 1990, with the press release in November and the market launch in early 1991. It had a new wedge shaped body with careful attention to aerodynamics, designed by Pinky Lai and Boyke Boyer, and development had begun back in 1981. The first cars to appear were four door saloons, with the coupe following soon after. It was the first 3 Series offered in a hatchback body style, though that version came later.
