Early models featured a low roof, and beginning with the 1989 models the Justy featured a high roof. All models received a restyling in 1989. In 1989 Fuji Heavy Industries signed a long term contract with the Taiwanese manufacturer Ta Ching Motor, which developed the Subaru Tutto notchback sedan, unique to Taiwan and based on the Justy hatchback. In some regions it was also marketed simply as the J series, J10 for the 1.0 liter versions and J12 for the later 1.2 liter versions.
