The Probe debuted in 1988 for the 1989 model year, a front wheel drive sport compact coupe on the Mazda GD platform powered by a 2.2 liter SOHC Mazda four. It had been developed as the next Mustang, until the first public reports of a front drive Mustang in 1987, which came from the AutoWeek cover story on the ST-16 project, brought a negative reaction. In the United States it was sold in GL, LX and GT trims, and Car and Driver put it on its Ten Best list for 1989.
