For 1989 the 3.0 liter V6 received a slight horsepower increase to 141 and was mated to a new four speed Ultradrive automatic transmission, and the year marked the fiftieth anniversary of the New Yorker name. Although no special anniversary edition was offered, it turned out to be the most popular New Yorker of the model run, with over 100,000 units produced that year, at a time when the Fifth Avenue and Imperial were in the same family.
