In February 1988 the Sprinter Carib was replaced by a larger Corolla based design, ending the Tercel wagon's run, and the four door sedan moved to the Corolla's underpinnings in 1988. The Tercel EZ was sold in North America for the 1988 model year. It was the last model year covered for the Toyota Tercel (third generation, L30), 1986 to 1989, and the Toyota Tercel (fourth generation, L40) came next, following the 1987 model year.
