In May 1988 the 1S-iLU engine of the Carina ED was replaced by the 1.8 liter 4S-Fi with 105 PS JIS net, so the engine lineup then consisted entirely of twin cam engines. It was the last model year covered for the Toyota Carina ED (first generation, T160), 1985 to 1989, and the Toyota Carina ED (second generation, T180) came next, following the 1987 model year.
