In 1988 the Sumo was in its sixth year on sale, with no central differential in its four wheel drive system, which meant that the four wheel drive mode could not be used for highway driving. In Sweden it was sold as the Columbuss and in Belgium as the Combi, and in other places it was called the E10 or E12 after its engine. The name Sumo was meant to evoke the strength of a sumo wrestler. It was launched with the option of four-wheel drive.
