The Sumo of 1987 was in its fifth year, a van that shared much with the Sambar but was bigger, with a 1.2 liter engine and the option of selectable four wheel drive, which was somewhat unusual for a microvan. Its four wheel drive worked through a button on the gear stick, and in normal driving only the rear wheels were driven. It was launched with the option of four-wheel drive. The Sumo shared many characteristics with the Sambar.
