The 626 was released in the United States for the 1988 model year in DX, LX and Turbo trims, and the station wagon on the GV platform, a true load carrier, was introduced in the northern spring of 1988. In February 1988 Mazda introduced four wheel steering on the 626 Turbo liftback, with Honda's Prelude 4WS the first such systems in the American market, and the Mazda system was electronic and more complex. The generation used the updated GD platform with engines that emphasised torque over outright power.
