The fourth generation Capella was released in May 1987 on the updated GD platform, some versions remaining in production in Japan until 1996, with new 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 and 2.2 liter engines. Four wheel drive was introduced in July 1987 for some versions, but never for the coupe or in the North American market. A new four speed automatic, trim changes and five colours came for 1987 on the last model year of the previous series.
