A variant known as the Merkur Scorpio was sold briefly on the North American market from 1988, at select Lincoln Mercury dealerships, offered only with the Cologne 2.9 litre V6 engine, producing 140 horsepower when introduced in 1988. The vast majority were fitted with the four speed automatic transmission. The European Scorpio Mark I was sold across Europe as the principal alternative to a Mercedes or BMW. The Scorpio was an executive car from Ford Germany, sitting on a stretched version of the Sierra floorpan.
