In a similar fashion to the North American Ford Ranger becoming the donor platform for the Ford Explorer SUV, the Courier of this generation was to become the base of a sport utility vehicle. In 1988 it was a Mazda built compact pickup with extended and four door cabs and optional four wheel drive. The Courier was a Ford nameplate used on very different vehicles in different places and years, from sedan deliveries to pickups and vans.
