A facelift to the existing Montego, designated AR9, was introduced at the NEC Motor Show in October 1988, enhancing its appeal, buoyed by both the Perkins engineered diesel model and the seven seater version. The AR16 and AR17 concepts, a Rover 400 series based on the Montego core structure, were abandoned in November 1988 due to lack of funds. The Montego of 1988 was built by the Rover Group. The facelift gave the Montego a new appeal for the final years.
