In February 1987 Twin Viscous full time four wheel drive with a limited slip differential at the rear axle became available on the Rex, and from then on every four wheel drive car got the more powerful three valve engine. In June 1987 an electronic continuously variable transmission, called ECVT, was added to the options list. In some export markets the Sambar microvan was marketed as the Rex Combi. The third generation was sold in Europe as the M70 and M80, and in Australia as the Sherpa and Fiori.
