The 1987 Aerostar was in its second year as Ford's first minivan, sold as passenger and cargo vans with a 2.3 liter four or a 3.0 liter V6. The HFX Aerostar Ghia, a High Feature Experimental prototype of future minivan design, was introduced at the 1987 Frankfurt Auto Show. The Aerostar sold behind the Chrysler minivans but ahead of the Chevrolet Astro and the Volkswagen Vanagon, consistently remaining in second place among minivans.
