The Aerostar was launched for the 1986 model year as the first Ford minivan, with a summer 1985 launch for which Ford used eight Lockheed C 130 Hercules aircraft to airlift Aerostars into eight cities across the United States. It shared two engines with the Ranger and Bronco II, a 100 horsepower 2.3 liter four and a 115 horsepower 2.8 liter V6, and as a running change in 1986 the 2.8 was replaced by a 145 horsepower 3.0 liter V6.
