From 1986 to 1989 a Holden Barina GTi model was also sold, being a rebadged Suzuki Swift GTi. In New Zealand the Barina, also sold as the Suzuki Swift, was assembled by GMNZ from 1985 until 1989. The 1986 Barina was a badge engineered Suzuki Cultus, which the Monash University Accident Research Centre rated significantly worse than average for occupant safety. The 1986 Barina added the GTi, a hot hatch, while the standard car was assembled in New Zealand.
