In 1986 the second generation range gained a station wagon sold as a Meteor, built alongside its Mazda 323 equivalent in New Zealand. The 1.6 litre B6 engine replaced the older 1.5, electronic fuel injection became available on the Ghia and standard on the TX3, and a four speed automatic was offered. The Laser was a Ford badged version of the Mazda Familia, and it was one of the smaller cars in the Ford range of that period.
