The Carina ED arrived in May 1985 with deliveries from August 1985, as a companion to the 1984 Carina sedan, positioned as a four door Celica. Its appearance was similar to the 1986 Camry Prominent, which also used a pillared hardtop and front wheel drive. This was the first model year of the Toyota Carina ED (first generation, T160), 1985 to 1989, the first generation covered for the Toyota Carina ED; the 1986 model year follows it.
