The Sumo of 1985 was in its third year on sale, a cabover microvan with a three cylinder EF engine of 997 cc or 1,189 cc based on that of the Justy, mounted at the rear of the van. It was offered with four wheel drive, and in European trim the carburetted 1.2 liter engine made 52 PS at 4,400 revolutions per minute. The name Sumo was meant to evoke the strength of a sumo wrestler. It was launched with the option of four-wheel drive.
