The German importer of Subaru chose the name Libero for the microvan after a public naming competition in 1984, and most European markets then used it, while the Sumo name was meant to suggest the Japanese origin of the van and the strength of a sumo wrestler. The first generation used 997 cc or 1,189 cc three cylinder engines. It was launched with the option of four-wheel drive. The Sumo shared many characteristics with the Sambar.
