The Dodge Caravan was launched in November 1983 for the 1984 model year, with the Plymouth Voyager, as the first minivans from an American maker. It followed the K car in style with vertically stacked headlamps and an eggcrate grille, where the Voyager had a grille with horizontal trim. It used a 2.2 liter four cylinder or an optional Mitsubishi 2.6, sat on a single 112 inch wheelbase and offered one sliding door, a liftgate and a 7 foot long cargo floor, nearly double the space of a K car station wagon.
