In 1983 the Volkswagen engine went out of production and a joint Chrysler and Peugeot 1.6 liter engine was used instead. The Omni 024 was renamed simply the Charger, the Plymouth Turismo appeared as its companion, and Carroll Shelby tuned a sportier version sold as the Dodge Shelby Charger, with higher compression, revised manual ratios, shorter springs and special wheels. The cars were built at the Belvidere plant in Illinois, which was later retooled to build the Dodge Dynasty.
