The third generation Celica was introduced in August 1981 with considerably revised styling in notchback coupe and liftback body styles. For 1981 the North American models received a bigger 2.4 liter SOHC 22R four cylinder engine producing 97 horsepower, and the second generation ended after Conversions by Tropic that started in mid 1980. This was the first model year of the Toyota Celica (third generation, A60), 1981 to 1985, which took over from the Toyota Celica (second generation, A40 and A50); the 1982 model year follows it. Model year pages for the Toyota Celica run from 1970 to 2006.
