The Mirage of 1981 was in the fourth year of the first generation, with 1,244 and 1,410 cc Orion engines in the three door and five door hatchbacks. The 1,410 cc variant featured modulated displacement, a system that could shut down cylinders under cruising or idle conditions to reduce fuel consumption. The Mirage was the entry level model for Mitsubishi in most overseas markets. In the United States and Canada the first four generations were sold through a venture with Chrysler as the Dodge Colt and the Plymouth Champ and Colt.
