The Debonair of 1981 was in its eighteenth year, still the same Continental influenced sedan that had remained generally unchanged from 1964 until 1986. Its mechanicals were routinely updated with the latest advancements as the years progressed, while its exterior appearance did not change on a regular basis. The word debonair means gentle, courteous, suave, lighthearted or nonchalant. Aside from a very minor export push in the 1960s, the Debonair was mainly sold in Japan.
