The American Mazda GLC, the Great Little Car, appeared in the 1981 model year, although the rear wheel drive wagon also continued. The four door saloon version of the Familia followed in January 1981, and a month later automatic equipped cars became available to European buyers. A facelift in 1981 gave the wagons the front clip of the front wheel drive models, with different bumpers. Mazda built the Familia at its Hiroshima plant and also assembled it from knock down kits in several countries.
