Honda introduced the first City in November 1981 with its innovative Tallboy design, whose unusual height let four adults sit comfortably in the very short car, under 3.4 m long. It was produced as a 3 door hatchback in a variety of trim levels, and was available together with the Motocompo, a special 50 cc foldaway scooter with 2.5 PS designed to fit in the City's small luggage area. When it came out, it was Honda's smallest car, though it did not satisfy Japan's kei rules.
