The 1981 Omni was produced nearly unchanged from the 1978 model, in the middle of its eleven years of production, with the front wheel drive Chrysler L platform and a transverse four cylinder engine. The Omni and the Plymouth Horizon were largely indistinguishable from one another except for the grilles, taillamps and model badging, and Chrysler assembled them at its Belvidere Assembly Plant in Belvidere, Illinois, with the entire L body line.
