The Durango went on sale for the 1979 model year as a limited production coupe utility sold through Ford dealers, the result of a joint venture between Ford and National Coach Works of Los Angeles. It was developed to rival the downsized 1978 Chevrolet El Camino. It was built by National Coach Works of Los Angeles rather than on a Ford assembly line. The Durango was a coupe utility conversion of the Fairmont Futura that Ford sold through its dealers in small numbers.
