The Tercel appeared in Japan in August 1978 as the first front wheel drive vehicle produced by Toyota, sold as the Corolla II and the Corsa at different dealer networks. Early Tercels have a longitudinally mounted engine, which only this model among front wheel drive Toyotas had. This was the first model year of the Toyota Tercel (first generation, L10), 1978 to 1981, the first generation covered for the Toyota Tercel; the 1979 model year follows it. Model year pages for the Toyota Tercel run from 1978 to 1999.
