The Lancer Celeste was facelifted in 1978, receiving square headlights and bigger, squarer bumpers, and Mitsubishi launched the Mirage that year as a hatchback, sold in many export markets as the Colt, whose sedan variant would be released in 1982 and become the base of later Lancers. The first generation Lancer was in its sixth year, with sedan, coupe and wagon bodies. The Lancer filled the gap between the Minica kei car and the larger Galant.
