In 1978 the Pinto was no longer the smallest Ford sold in the United States, when the company introduced the Fiesta, the German designed first front wheel drive Ford sold there. The safety agency informed Ford on 8 May 1978 of its determination that the Pinto fuel system was defective, and on 9 June 1978 Ford agreed to a voluntary recall of 1.5 million Pintos and Mercury Bobcats, the largest recall to that date.
