The 1978 Custom 500 was the last year of the larger generation of full size Ford, only available for fleet customers in the United States and still sold to retail customers in Canada, with a small block V8 up to 351 cubic inches. Approximately 7,850,000 full size Fords and Mercurys were sold over 1969 to 1978, which made it the tenth best selling automobile platform in history. The Custom served Ford as a fleet and economy nameplate.
