The Custom 500 of 1977 remained a fleet only model in the United States and a retail model in Canada, the basic full size Ford with a base inline six cylinder engine or a small block V8, up to the 351 by the mid to late 1970s. Consumer market full size Fords in the United States were consolidated under the LTD nameplate from 1975, and the Custom 500 stayed on in fleet markets. The Custom served Ford as a fleet and economy nameplate.
