The trim lines were rearranged for 1978: instead of separate base, Custom and SE models, there was a base model to which buyers could add Custom and SE option packages. A Richard Petty kit car package and a Super Coupe package with a 360 four barrel engine were offered. Wider taillight lenses with amber turn signals were fitted. Sales were down over 30 percent, with production of 166,419 Aspens. It was the third production year of the Aspen, sold as a captive twin of the Plymouth Volare.
