In June 1977 the Galant Lambda gained the 1600 SL and 1600 GS with the 4G32 Saturn engine, the SL meeting the 1978 emission rules with the silent shaft G32B and the GS using the twin carburetor 4G32 under the 1976 rules. The two liter models, except the GSR, were changed to meet the 1978 rules, which changed their model code to A133A. The car had the first square four headlights on a Japanese car. The Galant Lambda was sold at the Galant stores, while its sister car the Eterna Lambda was sold at the Car Plaza stores.
