The Galant Sigma, the third generation of the Galant, went on sale in May 1976 as a stylish four door sedan with a European look that no Japanese car of the time had, designed by an in house team led by Shinichi Mitsuhashi. It took over the private sedan role from the Galant of 1973, which had sold poorly after the oil shock. Between 1976 and 1987 the Galant sold in Japan was suffixed with the Sigma badge. Sigma was a model name that Mitsubishi used on several vehicles based on the Galant and the Diamante.
