The Chantez of 1975 was in its fourth year, the second last year of sales of a car that Mazda had once planned with a single rotor Wankel engine, a slimmed down derivative of the 10A of the R100, with test cars seen in 1970. Lobbying from other kei makers, who saw a rotary engine as an unfair advantage, led to a ban of rotary engines in the class. The Chantez had a longer wheelbase at 2,200 mm than most of its competitors.
