Sales of the Chantez halted without a replacement in 1976, on the eve of new kei car regulations, and Mazda lost interest in the kei class. Mazda did not market another kei passenger car until the Carol of 1989, a rebadged Suzuki Alto, and to this day it still chooses not to make its own engines for the kei class. The Chantez is a two-door kei car introduced by Mazda in July 1972. The name chantez is second-person plural present indicative of chanter, which in French means to sing.
