The Granada was introduced for the 1975 model year, between the Maverick and the Torino, and marketed as a luxury compact vehicle that expanded the segment in the United States. It was meant to succeed the Maverick, and its development was heavily influenced by the 1973 oil crisis, though the design work had begun earlier. The Mercury Monarch was introduced alongside it in 1975 and slotted above the Mercury Comet. A three speed manual gearbox was standard.
