In 1974 five mile per hour bumpers were added at both the front and rear to meet federal rules, though unlike most cars of the 1970s this did not require major changes to the bodywork. The underpowered Kent engine was dropped, and the optional overhead cam engine was expanded to 2.3 liters, an engine that stayed in production into 1997. It was the highest production year for the Pinto, with 544,209 built, and the Mercury Bobcat was introduced in Canada.
