In South Africa the E12 was introduced in March 1974, imported fully knocked down and assembled at Rosslyn by BMW South Africa with its own VIN series starting with ABM. This made the 5 Series one of the first BMW saloons assembled locally outside Germany. In Europe the range consisted of the 520, 520i, 525, 528 and 530i variants of the new executive car. In Germany the E12 had been on sale since 1972, and the South African cars were built from imported kits in addition.
