The new BMW Group Plant Dingolfing opened in September 1973, and the E12 production was phased over to it from Munich as the first car off its lines. The plant took over the series in a year when the E12 was still a young car, and it would go on to become BMW's largest European production site. This gave the 5 Series room to grow in volume as demand spread through Europe. The 5 Series name followed the convention later copied by the E21 3 Series, which borrowed its numbering.
