The introduction of the Toyota Publica Starlet, designation KP40, came in 1973 as a coupe version of the facelifted Publica. The pickup was originally only available with the 1.0 liter engine, although the 1.2 was made available after the January 1972 facelift. It was model year 5 of 7 in the Toyota Publica (third series, P30 and P50), 1969 to 1978, coming after the 1972 model year and before the 1974 model year.
