Following Dodge and Chevrolet and GMC, a V8 engine became optional on the Econoline in this generation, and the 1973 van was available with one. It was a front engine van with a longer wheelbase than the first generation, and a long wheelbase version that was the largest full size van of its day. It was the best selling full size van in the United States from 1980 until the Transit replaced the vans in 2014. The E Series was Ford's full size van, sold as the Econoline and Club Wagon and as a cutaway chassis.
