After the Custom was dropped following the 1972 model year, the Custom 500 continued as the economy full size Ford for 1973, available to fleet and budget conscious buyers, with a base inline six or a small block V8 and the SelectShift automatic. The companion station wagon series was the Ranch Wagon, and the Custom 500 was the lowest priced full size car in the Ford range. The Custom served Ford as a fleet and economy nameplate.
