The Custom was dropped after the 1972 model year, while the Custom 500 continued. As late as 1972 a powertrain combination of a 427 V8 and four speed manual was still available to police and performance oriented customers who wanted the lightest car possible. The Custom had been marketed to police and taxi fleets, with the Custom 500 slightly better trimmed, from 1964, below the Galaxie and LTD ranges. The Custom served Ford as a fleet and economy nameplate.
