The 1973 model year introduced a hatchback body style based on the two door coupe, and the front and rear of the Nova were restyled to meet the government mandate for bumpers that could withstand 5 mile per hour impacts at the front and 2.5 miles per hour at the rear. The SS option remained as a 123 dollar dress up package, with 35,542 installed, and every 1973 Nova got side guard door beams, extra sound insulation and flow through ventilation.
